Ring in the spring equinox on March 21 with a festive table, fresh ingredients, and traditional Persian recipes from your friends at Caspian.
One of the most important holidays in Persian culture, Nowruz ("new day") marks the Persian New Year and the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. Families use the time to celebrate together with music, dancing, gifts, and of course, delicious food. In 2022, Nowruz will fall on March 21—meaning now is the perfect time to start planning a celebratory feast.
Setting the Table
Create your own Haft-Sin table to symbolize new life and hope.
The Haft-Sin table is an important part of Nowruz celebrations. A special cloth called a safreh is first laid on the table. Then seven traditional items, each a symbol of spring and renewal starting with the letter sin in the Persian alphabet, are placed on it: Sabzeh (wheatgrass grown in a dish), Samanu (sweet pudding made from wheat germ), Senjed (sweet dry fruit of the lotus tree), Serkeh (Persian vinegar), Seeb (apple), Seer (garlic), and Somaq (sumac). Decorations also include mirrors, candles, painted eggs, water, and various fruits.
Stop by our marketplace (open 12:00-8:15 p.m., Tuesday thru Sunday) to find inspiration and supplies for your own Haft-Sin table!
